President Tinubu traveled to Buckingham Palace to discuss diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom with King Charles III, and the secret nature of their conversation has been revealed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga leaked details of the meeting to the public, saying that the President of Nigeria heartily expressed his desire to address issues of climate change and guarantee the security of energy.
Emphasizing the private nature of the high-level conversation between the two world leaders, Onanuga asserted that the meeting centered on exploring virgin opportunities for partnerships and collaboration in preparation for the coming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa.
The COP 29 meeting is scheduled to be held in Baku Stadium, Azerbaijan, between November 11 to 22, 2024.
The Presidential aide also revealed that both men talked at lengths on matters concerning climate change, while improving the existing bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
President Tinubu assured the British monarch that the Nigerian government isn’t taking the issue with laxity, rather they are working towards executing sustainable strategies that fall in accordance with the country’s goals.
He highlighted that getting our climate policies and actions right along with energy security is very instrumental in solving the teeming population of the nation.
Both leaders left no stone untouched concerning this issue, as the purpose of their discussion naturally drifted toward climate financing. They brainstormed on the current obstacles towards the sponsoring of their climate goals and expressed mutual interest and willingness to forge closer relationships in this regard.
Onanuga also spilled that the meeting was arranged at the instance of the King of the United Kingdom, and it was the first time they were meeting since their meeting last year in Dubai at the COP 28 Climate Summit.
