The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is well aware of the suspicions of Nigerians following their declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the presidential elections at 2 AM, an ungodly hour of the night. INEC has finally come out to state why they did that.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) squared it off against the people’s favorite, Peter Obi of the Labor Party (LP), in a sensitive battle for the seat of the president. Though Nigerians massively rallied around their perceived savior, Peter Obi, Tinubu remained calm because he knew exactly what he was going to do.
Just as the masses finished casting their votes and retiring for the day, thinking they’ve exercised their mandate, came out in their numbers to vote for the Labor Party, and installed their preferred Peter Obi into power, the tide of the battle switched when they least expected.
While men slept, Tinubu and the APC team swung into action to do what they knew how to do best. INEC surprisingly collated the results so quickly and immediately announced Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential elections while everyone was fast asleep with a smile of victory spread across their lips.
At the wee hours of the morning, far before daybreak, by 2 AM, Tinubu was suspiciously crowned to be Nigeria’s president with 8,794, 726 votes. Nigerians woke up angry at the news since they knew they were leading at the polls in daylight. But by then, it was too late.
INEC is now tired of the questioning of Nigerians and has come out to explain why they did what they did by 2 AM.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, defended their actions by stating that the electoral act or constitution doesn’t specify a particular time for declaring the results of elections.
Nevertheless, he assured Nigerians that the process was quite a meticulous and detailed one, even if it was done in the cover of darkness, away from the prying eyes of voters and Labor Party’s agents.
