Tems won the R&B/Hip-Hop songwriter of the year award, her fourth BMI Award, during the glitzy BMI Awards ceremony held on September 6 at Miami’s LIV nightclub. She was praised for her amazing talent for writing hit songs like “Free Mind” and Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up” from the “Black Panther” soundtrack, as well as for her outstanding cooperation on Future’s “WAIT FOR U.”
For penning singles like “Get Into It (Yuh),” “Woman,” and “Vegas,” Doja Cat was also honored as Songwriter of the Year.
In addition, Ice Spice received this year’s Impact Award for her hit-making creativity, creative vision, and influence on the future of music, while Chris Brown was named Songwriter of the Year for his work on the singles “Baddest,” “Come Through,” and “Under the Influence.”
The 36 most popular R&B and hip-hop tunes from the previous year were featured at this event, which celebrated the remarkable achievements of songwriters, producers, and music publishers. BMI has a vast catalog of more than 20.6 million musical compositions in the United States.
