A landmark ruling has taken effect today as Kwara State High Court has sentenced five suspects to the death penalty for their involvement in the deadly Offa Bank robbery that took place six years ago.
Justice Haleemah Salman passed the verdict on six suspects: Micheal Adikwu (Deceased), Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ayoade Akinbosun, Ibikunle Adeleye, and Adeola Abraham in the early hours of September 26, 2024, after the court has found the convict guilty of charges on culpable homicide, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms.
The deadly incident occurred on April 5, 2018, when a gang of heavily armed robbers attacked multiple banks in Offa, Kwara State.
The heist brought chaos upon the peaceful residents of Offa, resulting in the tragic loss of 33 lives, including nine police officers, and left the community in utter disarray. The robbers made use of explosives and heavy firearms, executing their plan swiftly and efficiently during an hour-long siege.
During the trial, it was proved that the convicts had no licenses for the firearms they possessed, further justifying their culpability.
Justice Salman emphasized that such heinous crimes demand severe punishment under Nigerian law. The court’s decision comes as a relief to many who have awaited justice for the victims and their families.
