Super Eagles Stranded In Libya: Hostilities And Threat Forces Them To Withdraw From Tuesday’s AFCON Qualifying Match

As even unprofessionalism has escalated, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have pulled out of their crucial AFCON qualifier against Libya due to hostilities and threats to their safety in Libya. After a sudden flight diversion left them stranded at Al Abraq Airport for over 12 hours with no food, the team faced unacceptable conditions, with no food, transport, or reception arranged.

Captain William Troost-Ekong shared the team’s distress on his Instagram page, revealing that the players have unanimously decided not to take the field under such circumstances.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) also confirmed this decision, emphasizing the lack of cooperation from Libyan authorities, who had previously agreed to facilitate their arrival in Benghazi.

This incident echoes past grievances, as Libyan players had previously complained about poor treatment during their visit to Nigeria. Although the NFF refuted these claims it now finds itself on the receiving end of a hostile welcome. As tensions rise, questions about sportsmanship and safety loom large over this match.

History recalls in 2022, players of Enyimba FC slept in the airport for 24 hours + after their opponents, Libyas’s Al Ittihad changed venue without communication.

With the Super Eagles leading Group D and a potential AFCON qualification at stake, this debacle not only jeopardizes the game but also raises alarming concerns about player safety in international competitions in Africa. The NFF is now scrambling to arrange a safe return home for the team.

As fans and analysts alike react with disbelief, this situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges athletes face beyond the pitch. Will CAF restore Nigeria’s hopes for AFCON glory by addressing this problem?
