Another chilling incident has sent shockwaves across social media, A Kogi State undergraduate Jeremiah, has been arrested by men of the Nigerian Police for the brutal murder of a fellow undergraduate, Damilola. This horrifying case of murder will be the third reported within two weeks, highlighting the rotten underbelly of crime that plagued our society as youth are becoming ruthless in their quest to get rich through human rituals.
Damilola, a promising student whose life was cut short was a 100-level Biology student at the Federal University Lokoja. She met Jeremiah at a gas station and what looked like an innocent encounter turned into a nightmare. Jeremiah lured her to his hideout, and he strangled her with clothes stuffed in her mouth to muffle her cries. This dastardly act was not just murder, it was a calculated move to remove her vital organs, allegedly to be used in a soap-making ritual.
Check the video of how the police found Damilola’s shallow grave:
The horror wasn’t just limited to that. The murderer Jeremiah, after receiving a ransom of N400,000 from Damilola’s family coldly ended her life and buried her in a shallow grave. What was more disturbing was the fact he continued to contact her family, demanding an additional N10 million. The family went to the police and filed a missing person report which led to his capture by the police, who tracked him down to his hideout.
Currently, more investigation is ongoing to determine if there are others involved in the murder. Nigerians are grappling with the reality of such heinous acts occurring repeatedly in the space of weeks. The incident raises alarming questions about the mentality of youths and this get-rich-quick syndrome and the societal factors that could lead to such depravity.
This tragic story serves as a reminder that evil often lurks in plain sight. As we reflect on this case, we must strive for better awareness, education, and support systems for our youth to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
